Title:
Sacred Bridge, Nikko in snow
Artist:
Takahashi Shotei (1871-1945) - You can find lots of information about Shotei on my
All About Takahashi Shotei page. He used various art names, such as Hiroaki, Rakutei, and Kakei.
Description:
The
Shinkyo or "Sacred" bridge at the Futarasan Shrine in Nikko, viewed from downstream, is an iconic scene which has been captured by every one of the
shin hanga artists. This is a classic Shotei print, in perfect condition. The blocks which were used to print this were displayed in the 2005 Ota-ku Folk Museum Shotei exhibition, loaned to the museum by Watanabe. The snow is "printed" normally, by letting the white paper show through, but also by the use of
gofun, an opaque white pigment sprayed onto the image.
