In the words of one well known collector/dealer, "This series of prints contains the essence of
shin hanga." I agree.
There were 21 separate designs listed in the Hasegawa catalog.
They were chuban format (about 10" x 7¼") and were for sale for $.60 each.
I've managed to collect color images for all of them.
Some are creped, and might not show up very clearly on the thumbnails below.
Some of the designs were issued in different color schemes (typically blue or sepia).
Where possible, I am showing the variant colors.
There are no artist attributions listed in the catalog.
Some copies were issued with no artist seal. I have seen some with the seal "Hiroshige".
These were "tourist" prints.
If there was a demand for Hiroshige prints, it seems that Hasegawa was willing to oblige.
Where I have seen recognizable (and believable) artist seals, I have attributed these prints to the various
artists.
Artists who contributed to this series include:
- Shoda Koho
- Eijiro
- Arai Yoshimune
- Kobayashi Kiyochika
- Gyosui
- Yoshimoto Gesso
If you have a clearer image than one of mine
and are willing to share it in cyberspace, please let me know.

NEWS FLASHES!
December, 2003: There have been sightings of brand new prints from the Night
Scenes series in shops around Tokyo and at a couple of American print dealers.
These prints have come from newly carved blocks and have the Nishinomiya Yosaku
copyright stamp in the margin.
What I've heard is that the current ownership of Nishinomiya has been contracting
with carvers and printers in Tokyo to produce these new prints, replicas of
their old images.
October, 2004: Thomas Crossland, of
Ukiyoe-Gallery.com, has written up another article about the
Night Scenes series on
this page.
