Since this print doesn't have a seal directly attributable to Shōtei, Hiroaki, or Kakei, it was not easy to decide to add it to this catalog. The character in the top seal is clearly the syllable "Ka" of "Kakei", but the lower seal definitely doesn't read "Kei". I've gotten conflicting translations from very knowledgeable Japanese friends about what it does read. In the absence of other compelling evidence, this ambiguous seal would normally exclude this print from the catalog.
However, there are multiple points which, when combined, make it compelling that this print be attributed to Shōtei. Here they are:
- Looking at this print, it talks to me and it says that it was designed by Shōtei. That's pretty subjective, but I make no apologies for it.
- This print was attributed to Kakei by Shimizu Hisao, in his second book where it is illustrated as plate #42. I'm not prepared to dispute one of Shimizu-san's attributions.
- The Watanabe pre-quake inventory number "480" was found stamped on the back of this print.
